Don’t Quit Your Career, Quit Your Workplace
This is where my conversation with Jamie ended up taking us. She had been telling me about the challenges she had gone through working as a nurse in Tampa Florida. From how much burnout she felt after taking care of challenging patients all day to the occasional moment you get held up at gunpoint. She was tired. Yet despite all the abuses she went through, she still didn’t want to quit working as a nurse.
She did, however, tell me she was at her breaking point. She looked at her options and decided to go back to school for a switch in her career. “I enrolled in nurse practitioners school with the intent to leave the bedside completely and leave my passion in emergency medicine,” she told me. Work can be hard, and for Jamie she was starting to lose her passion.
What changed this for her was traveling as a nurse. She fell in love with Critical Access Hospitals found in rural places. After working in a Critical Access Hospital, she found that there were workplaces which didn’t have the same challenges she found at her workplace in Florida. What was once a question of when to quit her job, became a question of where she should work next.
Relocating For Your Passion
Working in a rural community changed Jamie’s mood about her work. The biggest change for her was being a part of the community and feeling appreciation from those around her, “You can give them an ibuprofen and they will say ‘thank you very much’ instead of ‘where’s my dilaudid’.”
Not only did she find more gratitude from the community she worked in, but she felt like she was actually changing the community around her. Instead of the impersonal rush she had in Florida, she now has been able to enjoy spending more time getting to know her patients. Working with people has been the main reason for her passion being a nurse. Now, she feels she can spend the time necessary to truly help the people around her.
Jamie’s situation is not unique. Many people have quit their jobs because they’ve lost passion for their work. Moving somewhere new can be a wonderful opportunity to reinvigorate their love for what they do… and places like those in rural America are excited to hire capable workers.
A New Way to Find Value in Your Career
I love this idea of renewing your passion for your career by moving somewhere new. Your work satisfaction might be in jeopardy because you are working in the wrong place. If you are feeling undervalued in the workplace, there is a job where those you work with will appreciate you more. If you feel like you are losing your passion for your work, a new area with new people to work with, might renew your love for your job.
